Masai Giraffe: Conservation Profile (2025)

The short answer

The Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi) is the largest and typically tallest of the four giraffe species, instantly known by its dark, ragged, vine-leaf-shaped patches. About 43,926 live across Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and Rwanda. It holds two subspecies — the Masai giraffe and the Luangwa giraffe (formerly "Thornicroft's"). Assessed as Endangered in 2019, its numbers are now broadly stable and locally growing, and it is the best-studied giraffe on Earth, thanks to more than a decade of individual-based demographic research.

Identification

The Masai giraffe's coat is the most irregular of the four: patches with torn, leaf-like edges, often darker than other species, on a lighter background. It is also the biggest-bodied giraffe, and old bulls can turn very dark with age. In the Serengeti–Mara and across Tanzania, it is the default giraffe you will see; in Zambia's Luangwa Valley, the isolated Luangwa subspecies carries a distinctive look of its own.

The two subspecies

Masai giraffe — the widespread form across Kenya and Tanzania, including iconic landscapes like the Serengeti, Tarangire, and the Maasai Mara.

Luangwa (Thornicroft's) giraffe — a geographically isolated population in Zambia's Luangwa Valley, now recognised as a subspecies of the Masai giraffe rather than a separate type. Small and localised, it is expanding in range and number — a quiet success in a single valley.

Where Masai giraffes live

The Masai giraffe is an animal of the East African savanna and woodland, from Kenya's rangelands through Tanzania's great parks and south into Zambia. Its populations straddle national parks, community lands, and private conservancies, so its fate is tied to landscape connectivity — the ability to move between seasonal ranges without being blocked by farms, fences, or roads.

Threats

  • Habitat fragmentation and land conversion as agriculture and settlement expand across East Africa.
  • Roads and infrastructure that cut movement corridors and raise collision and isolation risk.
  • Poaching and snaring, including bushmeat pressure near growing settlements.

Researchers, including the Wild Nature Institute, have photographically tracked thousands of individual Masai giraffes in Tanzania for years, measuring adult and calf survival, reproduction, and how land use shapes them. This work revealed, among other things, how calf survival and the presence of older females drive population trends — insight that now informs giraffe conservation everywhere.
