The short answer
Giraffe taxonomy — how giraffes are named and classified — was rewritten by genetics. DNA analysis revealed that giraffes are not one species with regional variety but four genetically distinct species, as different from one another as brown bears are from polar bears. In August 2025 the IUCN made this official. Taxonomy may sound like a museum detail, but for giraffes it is conservation infrastructure: it decides how risk is measured, which populations get protected, and how animals can safely be moved. Where giraffes sit in the tree of life
Giraffes belong to the family Giraffidae, which today contains only two living members: the giraffe (genus Giraffa) and its forest cousin, the okapi (Okapia johnstoni). Within Giraffa, the four recognised species each carry a two-part scientific (binomial) name:

How genetics changed the picture
For most of history, giraffes were classified by appearance — coat pattern, range, body shape. Appearance is a weak guide when animals look broadly alike, and it led to a long-standing assumption of a single species. Molecular genetics overturned it.
Studies comparing nuclear and mitochondrial DNA across giraffe populations, most influentially Fennessy et al. in 2016 and later analyses, found deep genetic divisions between several lineages — divisions maintained over 1–2 million years with little interbreeding, even where ranges nearly meet. Statistical "species delimitation" work (see the PLOS ONE analysis) tested whether these clusters were best described as one species or several, and repeatedly supported multiple species. The IUCN's 2024–2025 Taxonomic Task Force reviewed this whole body of evidence — genetic, morphological, and geographic — before recognising four species.
The four species were always there in the DNA. Genetics simply gave us the eyes to see what appearance had hidden.
Why this matters for conservation
Taxonomy is not academic when it decides where protection goes:
- It measures risk honestly. Lumped together, a booming southern population could mask a collapsing northern one behind a single reassuring average. Split apart, each species' true status becomes visible — which is why three of four are now individually tracked and three are recovering.
- It sets priorities. With ~7,000 northern giraffes versus ~69,000 southern, knowing which species a population belongs to changes how urgent — and how fundable — its protection is.
- It guides the Red List. Each species now gets its own IUCN assessment, rather than hiding under one genus-level label.
Why genetics matters for moving giraffes
Genetics is especially critical for translocations — moving giraffes to re-establish or reinforce populations. Mix the wrong lineages and you can blur distinct species, waste a small population's genetic value, or import disease. So a sound translocation plan always asks:
- Which species and subspecies are involved?
- Is the destination inside the animals' historical range?
- Are the source and destination genetically compatible?
- Is the habitat suitable and the protection funded long-term?
Managing small, isolated populations to avoid inbreeding while respecting species boundaries is one of the most important — and most technical — tasks in giraffe conservation.
Why donors should care about specificity
Taxonomy also underpins honest fundraising. "Save giraffes" is emotionally clear but scientifically vague.
