The short answer
The extinction clock on our home page is a warning scenario, not a prediction. It asks a single, auditable question: if the giraffe decline rate of 1985–2015 returned and continued in a straight line, when would the modelled last wild giraffe arrive? The answer is 9 October 2063. That date is deliberately transparent — and just as deliberately, we tell you the more hopeful truth right beside it: as of 2025, there are about 140,700 giraffes and three of the four species are increasing. The clock is there to show what unmanaged decline looks like, so that it never happens.
Why build a clock at all
Giraffes suffered a "silent extinction" precisely because their decline was abstract and easy to ignore. A counter makes the stakes emotionally legible without inventing a false fact — provided it is honest about being a scenario. Our rule is simple: the clock may be dramatic, but it must be defensible to a scientist and a journalist. So we show our arithmetic in full.
The model, step by step
The clock uses a linear decline model based on widely cited historical estimates:

That is the whole calculation. Take the 1985–2015 loss, spread it evenly per year, extend the line from the 2015 figure, and it reaches zero in late 2063. The number the home page shows — about 5.48 giraffes "lost" per day — is simply 2,000.5 ÷ 365. It is the scenario's daily rate, not a claim about today.
Why 2063, and not a scarier date
Some campaigns pick a nearer, more alarming year. We do not, because a nearer date would imply a faster decline than the public data support. The honest, still-urgent line is:
The Last Giraffe must never be real. If the old collapse rate returned, the warning clock reaches zero in 2063.
Urgency and honesty are not in tension here. A defensible scenario is more persuasive to the teachers, journalists, and donors we most want to reach, not less.
Why this is explicitly not the current trend
This is the most important section on the page. The historical collapse rate is not what is happening now. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation's State of Giraffe 2025 reports roughly 140,701 giraffes across the four species and positive trends for three of four. The clock therefore always uses careful language — "historical collapse scenario," "if the old decline rate returned," "modelled date," "warning, not prediction." We would rather lose a little drama than mislead a single reader.
Why a linear model, knowing it's imperfect
A straight line is not biologically realistic, and we say so. Real extinction risk is non-linear: small populations can crash far faster through inbreeding, drought, disease, poaching, and conflict, while protected populations can recover — as three giraffe species are doing right now. We use a linear model for one reason: it is simple, transparent, and hard to hide behind. Anyone can check the four numbers above and reproduce the date. A more complex model would be easier to dispute and easier to fudge.
The value of the clock is not that it predicts the future. It is that it is easy to audit and impossible to spin.
How the clock should be used
The clock is a device to connect attention to real conservation work — land protection, ranger patrols, habitat restoration, population monitoring, community agreements, and veterinary support. It must never be used to claim extinction is certain. The entire point is the opposite: the clock exists to be stopped.
