Compares bacterial and fungal fecal communities in healthy and diarrhoeic giraffes, identifying changes in composition and bacterial richness.

Study summary

A sick giraffe’s droppings reveal changes in both bacteria and fungi. The microbial community associated with diarrhoea is not simply a list of possible pathogens: it also includes organisms involved in breaking down food and maintaining the gut environment. Comparing the whole community could expose changes that a search for one suspected germ would miss.

Aoyun Li, Bingxian Liu and colleagues compared six healthy giraffes with six suffering from diarrhoea at Yichang zoo in China. All were four years old, with equal numbers of males and females in each group and similar management. The team sequenced bacterial and fungal genetic markers in faeces collected before the sick animals received medication.

The groups differed in the relative abundance of numerous bacterial and fungal groups. Estimated bacterial richness was lower in the diarrhoeic animals, although two other measures of bacterial diversity did not differ significantly. Overall fungal diversity also showed no significant change despite shifts in particular fungi. Because the animals were sampled after illness was apparent, the comparison cannot establish whether microbial changes caused diarrhoea or followed it. It identifies a broader disturbance associated with sickness, while leaving the crucial direction of that relationship unresolved; it did not test a treatment.
